Kirsten Book, PMHNP-BC, is a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner providing personalized care to children, teens, and adults in Illinois, Washington, Arizona, and California. Why this practice exists

Giving the care she knew was missing in psychiatry.

Kirsten’s work is deeply personal.

For years, she struggled with bulimia and became frustrated with treatment that left her feeling dismissed and defined by a diagnosis. She was told she might become a “chronic relapser,” a label that made recovery feel distant and caused her to question her worth and future.

Recovery is possible. Her recovery proved that label wrong.

Kirsten recovered. Her experience convinced her that recovery is possible, and that no one should be taught to expect a lifetime of hopelessness, dependence, or relapse. Some people do need long-term support, but long-term support should never mean giving up on growth, autonomy, or a meaningful life.

From experience to purpose

From recovery to purpose.

Kirsten decided to become the kind of psychiatric provider she had once needed: someone who would listen carefully, stay curious, and never reduce a patient to a chart or label.

Her own experience with ADHD later helped her recognize how attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation, eating patterns, substance use, anxiety, and depression can overlap. That discovery led her to study these connections more deeply and to look for patterns that may be missed when each symptom is treated in isolation.

Her work is grounded in a simple belief:

People deserve care that helps them understand themselves—not care that makes them feel broken.

Capacity, on purpose

A smaller practice by design

Kirsten intentionally maintains a smaller patient panel so she can give each person more time, attention, responsiveness, and continuity.

Instead of moving quickly from one brief appointment to the next, she creates room to understand what is happening, answer questions, review progress, and adjust treatment thoughtfully.

Established patients receive a response within 24 hours, and follow-up appointments are often available within 24 hours. Kirsten also offers weekend availability for established patients when something needs timely attention. The practice is not an emergency or 24-hour crisis service.

Her clinical approach

Whole-person care, not prescription-only care

Medication may be part of treatment, but it is never the only part of the conversation.

Attentive evaluation

Understanding symptoms, history, goals, previous treatment, physical health, and the circumstances surrounding daily life.

Medication management

Selecting, monitoring, and adjusting medication carefully while discussing benefits, side effects, concerns, and alternatives.

Integrative evaluation

Considering sleep, nutrition, stress, lifestyle, laboratory findings, and other health factors when clinically relevant.

Therapeutic support

Drawing from CBT, DBT, supportive therapy, and person-centered therapy to help patients build insight and practical skills.

Genetic testing and lab work

Kirsten incorporates genetic testing and laboratory work into her personalized approach, helping her evaluate medication response, physical-health factors, and the complete clinical picture.

Collaborative care

Working with therapists, psychologists, dietitians, primary-care providers, schools, and family members when appropriate and authorized.

Principles

What patients can expect

You are more than a diagnosis.

A diagnosis can guide care, but it should never become your entire identity.

Questions are welcome.

Patients and families deserve clear explanations and space to participate in decisions.

Care should be personal.

No two histories, bodies, families, or goals are identical.

Hope and honesty can coexist.

Kirsten is honest about the work involved, and she believes recovery is possible and care should support possibility rather than reinforce hopelessness.
